Jazz music can be heard in cafes, bars and stylish boutique shops. Jazz used to be the popular music of its time until about 1950’s when it was replaced by Rock n Roll. However, jazz is not obsolete and continues to exist and has developed many sub-genres and styles over the years. Jazz has a rich history in America as well as in Hong Kong. In this seminar, we aim to introduce jazz to you on a 101 level. We will travel in a time capsule starting from New Orleans where jazz was born, and then explore the different types of jazz music which influenced Shanghai and Chinese music. In fact, Hong Kong people are familiar with jazz because some of the old Cantonese movies featured funny and humorous songs that were adapted from Cuban jazz.
